Essential Question: Where is the largest outdoor art show ever?

Learning Objectives:

– Explain that for all of August, American art is being displayed in all 50 states          and D.C. in outdoor installations and on billboards

– Define a portrait as an image of a person’s face and upper body

 

Summary: For the entire month of August, American art is being displayed across the United States in installations and on approximately 50,000 billboards. The public voted on their favorite art pieces, and 58 images were selected to be shown in all 50 states and D.C. The art show is appropriately named Art Everywhere, as it is the largest outdoor art show ever. Students learn about American art, artists, and what a portrait entails.

Essential Question: What happens in the Japanese owl café?

 

Vocabulary: mystical, wisdom, nocturnal, camouflage

 

Learning Objectives:

– Define a nocturnal animal as one that is awake at night and asleep during   the day.

– Explain that owls’ feathers are camouflage, meaning that they have the       same colors as their surroundings so that they blend into the environment.

– Identify the Japanese café as a café where customers can interact with owls.

 

Summary: A café in Tokyo, Japan has combined a café with wild owls. Customers are able to visit the café to get a refreshing drink and visit with several types of owls. The customers can see the owls up close and even pet some of them. Students learn what a nocturnal animal is and how an owl’s feathers act as camouflage.

Essential Question: Why are sharks in danger, and how does the Chinese government hope to solve the problem?

Learning Objectives:

– Identify the Great White shark as one of the most endangered animals.

– Explain how the consumption of shark fin soup in China contributes to the             deaths of millions of sharks each year.

– Explain how sharks’ survival helps maintain the food chain and the ocean’s ecosystems.

– List some things to do to help protect sharks and other animals that live in the ocean.

 

Summary: The Ocean Park Aquarium in Hong Kong recently opened its doors to locals and tourists with an exhibit named “Shark Mystique.” The new aquarium features over 100 sharks and stingrays. The mission of this new exhibit is to raise awareness about the rapidly decreasing shark population. Students learn that Great White sharks are one of the most endangered species in the world and about why their survival at the top of the food chain is important.
