Essential Question: How do human inventions change our community?

Content Objective: Recount the ways drones are used by listing them in small groups.

Vocabulary: drone, knocked it out(or knocked down), gathered around, attach, delivering

Summary: Have you ever seen a drone in the sky? Well, this Chimpanzee at the Burgers Zoo got a good look at one and then knocked it out of the sky. The chimp used a long stick to knock the drone to the ground. He then climbed down his tree to get a better look at it.

 

Newscast: Michelle Obama’s Garden (Intermediate)

Essential Question: What is a healthy lifestyle?

Content Objective: Support their claim about how to have a healthy lifestyle citing information from the newscast.

Vocabulary: campaign, encourage, challenge(verb form)

Summary: U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama has begun her latest garden challenge at the White House as part of her “Let’s Move” campaign. Recently, Mrs. Obama invited a group of Washington D.C. area children to help her plant a vegetable garden outside the White House. The First Lady hopes this will encourage kids and communities around the country to plant their own community gardens.

 

Newscast: Volcano Erupts in Chile (Advanced)

Essential Question: How do volcanoes change the Earth’s surface?

Content Objective: Describe how energy from volcanoes causes changes to Earth’s surface by explaining a volcanic eruption to a partner.

Vocabulary: erupted, layer of ash, evacuated, affect, exposed, molten rock, mudslides, floods, Earth’s surface, “Rim of Fire”, chain

Summary: Recently, the Calbuco Volcano, an active volcano in Southern Chile, erupted and covered the skies of Chile and southern Argentina in ash. The volcano, which is considered the third most dangerous volcano in the world, erupted for the first time in over 50 years. The eruption sent a thick layer of ash over 12 miles up into the sky.
