Summary: Recently, videos showing people dumping buckets of cold water on their heads have gone viral on the internet. These crazy and amusing videos are part of a fundraiser called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Students learn the rules for the challenge along with the purpose. They also learn what “viral on the internet” means.

– Identify Renée as an elephant at the Toledo Zoo that paints with her trunk.

– Describe some special traits about elephants and their habits.

Summary: Renée is a 32-year-old elephant at the Toledo Zoo who loves to paint in watercolors. She uses her trunk to hold a paintbrush while she uses the 44,000 muscles in her trunk to control her strokes. Students learn about how long elephants live, how tall they get, how much they weigh, and what they like to eat.

Essential Question: Who is Ernest Hemingway?

Learning Objectives:

– Identify Ernest Hemingway as a famous American author from the early     20th century.

– Identify the Nobel Prize in Literature as an annual award that is the highest           honor in literature.

– Explain the inspiration behind Hemingway’s novel A Farewell to Arms.

Summary: Key West celebrated the city’s annual Hemingway Days—a tribute to the famous American author, Ernest Hemingway, who wrote some of his best stories while living on the island during the 1930s. People from around the nation participated in events such as the Hemingway look-a-like contest and a mock run with the bulls in memory of Hemingway’s love for the sport of bullfighting. Students learn about the renowned American author and how people are still fascinated by him 53 years after his death.
