Newscast: Moscow Holiday Skating Rink K-2

Essential Question: What special tradition takes place in Moscow during the winter?

Learning Objectives:

– Identify ice-skating as a popular winter activity.

– Identify Moscow as the capital of Russia.

          Summary: For many people around the world, ice-skating is a hobby when winter rolls around. But, for residents of Moscow, Russia it’s the main event. Every year in the city’s historic Red Square a rink is built and it welcomes skaters from the beginning of the winter until spring.

Essential Question: What is the goal of Band Aid 30?

Learning Objectives:

– Identify Band Aid 30 as an effort of many famous musicians to raise money to                help stop the spread of Ebola.

– Explain what a philanthropist does.

Summary: Recently, several British rock and pop stars gathered in London to record the song, “Do They Know It’s Christmas” to raise money for West African nations struggling to stop the spread of Ebola. Ebola is a deadly virus and has recently killed over 5,000 people in several West African countries.

Essential Question: Who celebrates Christmas and what is its significance?

Learning Objectives:

– Identify Christmas as a Christian holiday that falls on December 25th and             commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ.

Summary: This season, over 500 people marched alongside holiday floats in the Christmas parade in La Paz. Many of the parade participants dressed up in holiday costumes such as snowmen, Christmas trees, or Santa Claus. They also sang along to Christmas carols on the parade route while a crowd of about 10,000 viewers cheered them on.

 

Newscast: New Lammily Doll 3-5

Essential Question: What makes the Lammily doll different from other dolls?

Learning Objectives:

– Identify the Lammily doll as a new doll that hopes to promote realistic beauty    standards based on average teenage female body proportions.

Summary: A new doll will soon appear on the shelves of toy stores around the U.S., just in time for the holiday season. The Lammily doll may look like a Barbie doll at first glance, but unlike Barbie, the new doll has the proportions of an average teenage female body. The creator of Lammily, graphic designer Nickolay Lamm, wanted to make a doll that looked more like a real human being while still being stylish and beautiful.
