Newscast: Flying Car Takes Flight K-2

Essential Question: How does the flying car work?

Learning Objectives:

– Explain how the Flying Roadster operates as both a car and a plane.

Summary: Stefan Klein always dreamt of combining cars and planes into one super vehicle, and his dream has now come true. After 20 years of designing, the Flying Roadster has made its first public appearance. People not only got to see the sleek car plane drive down the road, but they also got to see it fly through the skies.

 

Newscast: Picasso Museum Reopens in Paris 3-5

Essential Question: What kind of artwork did Picasso create in his lifetime?

Learning Objectives:

– Identify Pablo Picasso as a famous Spanish artist who founded the Cubist          movement and created over 50,000 works of art in his lifetime.

– Define Cubist art as a kind of abstract art that looks like square puzzle pieces      broken up and rearranged in a painting.

– Define Surrealist art as abstract art based on fantastical scenes and objects from   dreams.

Summary: After five years of renovations, the Picasso Museum in Paris recently opened its doors to the public. This museum is one of the world’s largest collections of paintings, sculptures, and prints by Pablo Picasso. The museum displays over 5,000 of Picasso’s works, as well as his personal journals and sketches.

Essential Question: What world records did Nik Wallenda break this week?

Learning Objectives:

– Name the two world records that Nik Wallenda broke.

Summary: Daredevil tightrope walker Nik Wallenda broke two world records by walking between two Chicago skyscrapers on a thin metal wire. The wire was only as thick as a quarter. In order to get safely across, Nik used a 24-foot long balance pole.

 

Newscast: Executive Action on Immigration 3-5

Essential Question: What does President Obama’s new executive action hope to accomplish?

Vocabulary: executive action, undocumented, immigrant, deportation, legal permanent resident, citizen, colonize, migrate, migrant, Border Protection Agency, inhospitable

Learning Objectives:

– Explain the primary goal of President Obama’s new executive action.

– Name the three groups of people that are explicitly protected under President      Obama’s new plan.

– Define the terms undocumented, immigrant, and deportation.

Summary: President Barack Obama has taken executive action to shield up to 4 million undocumented immigrants from deportation. The vast majority of undocumented immigrants in the US are people that migrated to find work opportunities and to give their children the chance to have a better life.

Those that will be protected under the president’s plan are:

-undocumented immigrants, who have lived in the United States for at least 5 years who have no criminal record

– undocumented immigrants who are parents of US citizens and legal permanent residents

– Children that were brought to the US by their undocumented parents
